Dr Li Jin is
a Consultant Clinical
Scientist at the Virus
Reference Department, Centre
for Infections of Health
Protection Agency, London,
UK. She was initially
trained in medicine, but
decided to purse her career
in public health
specialising in virology. In
1984 she was appointed as
lecturer in viral immunology
at Medical University of
China after completion of
her Master degree in
virology and immunology. She
spent 15 months at St.
George’s Hospital Medical
School, University of London
as a visiting scholar
supported by the
Sino-British Friendship
Scholarship, training in
clinical viral diagnosis
then completing her PhD
study in molecular virology
in 1994 over working at
Centre for Infections,
Health Protection Agency
(previous Centre for Public
Health Laboratory) as a
clinical scientist. Her main
contributions to the field
of public health include
development of clinical
diagnostic and molecular
surveillance services using
oral fluid as specimen for
measles, mumps and rubella
viruses as well as to
studies in those associated
diseases. Her achievement
has contributed to the
epidemiology of measles,
mumps and rubella in the UK,
the roles of the WHO Global
Specialised Laboratory for
Measles and Rubella, and the
WHO goals and strategies for
global measles and rubella
eradication. She has been
therefore invited as WHO
adviser/consultant in
measles, mumps, rubella and
SARS when required since
1998, becoming a
member/fellow of Royal
College of Pathologists in
2003.
