Dr Shudong Wang

Expert and Reader of kinase inhibitor and new drugs, University of Nottingham, UK

Dr Shudong Wang is an Associate Professor and Reader in the School of Pharmacy, University of Nottingham, UK. Prior to join the university in October 2005, she worked for Cyclacel Ltd., a biopharmaceutical company in Scotland, initially as a medicinal chemist and then Head of Chemistry in 2000. She helped to establish medicinal chemistry and drug discovery capabilities of the company. From 2000-2005, as a program manager she was also involved in research and management of an oncology drug discovery program. She led a multi-disciplinary team and successfully delivered several credible drug leads, some of which are currently at clinical and pre-clinical development stages. Dr Wang obtained her PhD from the Center for Molecular Architecture, Central Queensland University, Australia in 1997.

Dr Wang’s current research focuses on the discovery and development of novel protein kinase inhibitors for various therapeutic indications. This involves structure- and target-guided design and synthesis of compound libraries that are used to characterise the cellular consequences associated with the diseases. The strategy holds promise for rapid advancement of drug discovery in an effort to identify both drug candidates and novel therapeutic targets.

Dr Wang has trained many researchers at all levels from undergraduate project students, PhD students and post doctors. Since joining the School in October 2005 her group has grown with 7 PhD students and 4 post doctoral researchers. She is a Guest Professor at Sun Yat-Sen University, China and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry and a member of Young Chemists Committee, America Association of Cancer Research, American Chemical Society, and The Royal Australia Chemical Society. To date she has authored over 90 research papers and patents.
