Promega announce winners of Young Life Science Awards

Southampton, 22 May 2008 – Promega, a leader in innovative solutions and technical support to the life sciences industry, announced today the recipients of its annual Young Scientist Award for Biochemistry 2008. The awards are in recognition of the most outstanding PhD students in the UK, in the fields of Biochemistry, Genetics and Immunology.

First prize was awarded to Rodoniki Athanasiadou of the University of Edinburgh with the abstract ‘Transcriptional Determination of the Oct4 Methylation Pattern’.  Lynne Marshall of The Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, Glasgow was awarded second place in the competition, with the abstract ‘Elevated tRNA Synthesis Can Drive Proliferation and Oncogenic Transformation’. In third place with the abstract ‘Oestrogen Receptor β Expression is Regulated by Alternative 5’UTRs’ was Laura Smith of The University of Leeds.

Dr Damien Wells, Senior Technical Sales Specialist, Promega, said, “The standard of entry this year was exceptionally high making the task of judging very challenging for the team of judges from both The Biochemical Society and Promega. This competition is judged on the following key criteria; scientific content, presentation style and response to questions.  On this basis, Promega was delighted in awarding Rodoniki’s submission as the strongest.”

As an industry leader in providing tools for Life Science Research, Promega recognizes the importance of education at all levels and in particular is committed to advancing research in the Life Sciences sector. Promega established The Young Life Scientist Awards to inspire scientists at the beginning of their research careers and provide a platform for research to be presented to their peers. The awards attract an annual prize fund in excess of £3,500 plus an annual subscription to Science magazine.

Derek McCall, Managing Director, Promega said, “The Promega Young Life Science awards have traditionally been limited to those PHD students in Biochemistry, Genetics and Immunology. In recognition of the great research work done in other fields of study, and more reflective of the sectors Promega products and solutions are used in, moving forward the award will no longer be limited to these three disciplines. From 2009 the awards format will be changing to form one annual award for Promega Young Life Scientist of the Year. The prize fund will also increase as a result.”
