The 15th Annual Conference of
China Life Scientists Society was
successfully held in the Christopher
Ingold Auditorium, Chemistry Building,
UCL on September 12th and 13th.
The aim of the conference is to provide
a platform for Chinese life scientists
in UK to exchange ideas, share
experience and establish collaborations
with each other and also with life
scientists in China.

The conference was opened by welcome
speeches from the Chairman of organising
committee, Dr Xiongzhong RUAN and the
President of CLSS-UK, Dr Qihe XU,
respectively. Pro-Provost for China of
University College London Professor
Zhengxiao GUO gave a welcoming remark to
all delegates. Founding Chairman of CLSS-UK,
Professor Zihe RAO, an academician of
the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
and President of Nankai University gave
an invited talk in the opening ceremony.
The Minister Counsellor Mr. Xiaogang
TIAN from the Education Section of
Chinese Embassy and Minister
Counsellor Mr. Futao CHEN from the
Science and Technology Section also
addressed to the conference and
emphasised on the vital contribution
overseas Chinese researchers have made
to China.
The Scientific Programme in the meeting
covers expanding list of topics related
to all major areas of basic,
translational and clinical bio-sciences.
Invited presentation were given by
Professor Ziheng YANG (UCL) who is the
first British Chinese awarded the title
of FRS (Fellow of Royal Society);
Professor Qingbo XU (King’s College
London) who founded one of the biggest
vascular biology research centres in
Europe and is the Chair of two major
research programmes focusing stem cells;
Professor Ping WANG (Queen Mary) who is
leading expert in experimental
immunology and Professor Tak LEE (King’s
College London) who is the director of
division of asthma allergy and lung
biology. In addition, we invited
Professor Mingqin DU, Professor Qingbo
XU, Dr Wei WANG, Dr Henglong HU, Dr Qihe
XU to hold a ‘Meet experts’ excise for
young investigators and PhD students
which provided an opportunity for them
for discussion ‘how to develop
scientific career’ with the experts. We
also had a special seminar ‘Broad
Exchanges of Views’ in which several
senior professors from chemistry and
materials, bio-engineering, compute
science, law, and economics were invited
to discuss and exchange the views for
the life science.
Dr Xiongzhong RUAN from University
College London was elected as new
Chairman of the CLSS-UK. Professor
Qingbo XU from King’s College London was
elected as the president of the ALSC-UK.
By a rigorous nomination and selection
process, eight senior members of CLSS-UK
were elected as new fellows of ALSC-UK.
They are Professor Kian Fan CHUNG from
Imperial College London, Professor Ian
WONG from University of London School of
Pharmacy, Professor Ping WANG from Queen
Mary College, Professor Swee Lay THEIN,
Dr. Wuding ZHOU and Ying Sun from King's
College London, Dr. Suling LI from
Brunel University, and Dr Zhiliang LU
from the British Medical Research
Foundation Institute of Edinburgh. Warm
congratulations to the new fellows of
ALSC-UK!

The 15th conference of CLSS-UK
hosted about 200 registered
