The 1st Meeting of the CLSS-UK Standing, Executive and Advisory Committees

The 1st joint meeting of the CLSS-UK standing, executive and advisory committees was held on 2nd Dec 2007 at the Education Section of Chinese Embassy.

 

On behalf of the Education Section of Chinese Embassy, Mr WANG Yongda addressed the welcome speech to the Committee members and thanked their presence and participation. He pointed out that the next main objective for the new CLSS-UK Committees is to improve the management of academic resource in the UK, as well as to strengthen the collaboration with researchers in China. Participants agreed that better partnership with Chinese researchers would be a good opportunity to create a win-win situation for both UK and China. A session of self-introduction of all members was followed. The new President of CLSS, Dr. XU Qihe’s concise review of CLSS-UK’s history highlighted its remarkable contribution to the UK’s life science advancement and its promotion on the research development in China. He also introduced briefly the present situation and working committee of CLSS-UK. Apart from improvement in general management, in prospect, Dr. Xu specifically suggested three missions to be undertaken by the Committees: 1)The establishment of a new department within the Society to provide better service for senior researchers and scientists, and to heighten the Society’s academic credibility and social prestige; 2)Membership promotion in diverse regions to achieve better disciplines and gender balance; 3) Broaden financial resources and ensure reasonable use in society activities. The CLSS treasurer, Dr DONG Xuebin reported to the attendants the CLSS financial conditions. Then the attendant discussed the issues such as the improvement of co-operation between CLSS-UK and researchers in China, the enhancement of co-operation with other association (CSSA in UK, other professional societies in UK and China, et al), the application for CLSS being registered as charity, the upgrade of member benefits, the extension of region coverage, website management, newsletter editing, CLSS-UK Annual Meeting and Symposia, and membership database.

 

In the afternoon, the attendants discussed the foundation of Chinese Life Science Academy. A draft proposal was given by Dr WANG Wei, Dr. HU Henglong and Prof. XU Qingbo. Finally, Dr. XU Qihe thanked Education Section of Chinese Embassy for the continuous support, Dr. FANG Xin for organising the productive meeting and thanked everyone for their efforts in attending the meeting and their active participations.
