ALSC-UK
held meeting in Cambridge in April 2009
The Academy of Life Sciences for
Chinese in the UK (ALSC-UK) held an important
meeting at The Orchard Tea House in Grantchester,
Cambridge, on Saturday 18 April 2009.
The following proposals were made
during the meeting and have been later on
approved by all Fellows through e-mail
discussions:
1. ALSC-UK President Election:
It has been agreed that ALSC-UK President
election will be carried out before the
September London Annual Meeting and the new
President will take office at the September
meeting in London. The agreed election
procedures are as follows: Each nominee needs
endorsement of at least 2 Fellows; this is
followed by the CLSS Chairman Group contacting
nominated candidates and coordinating with the
Academy to come up with a list of eligible
candidates (at least 2 candidates) for voting by
all Fellows.
2. Appointment of Dr Tai-Ping FAN
as an Assistant President of ALSC-UK:
Since Dr Mingqiang Zhang is leaving for China to
take up a challenging role as Chief Technology
Office and Vice-President (R&D) of an
international pharmaceutical company, it has
unanimously agreed that Dr Tai-Ping Fan will
succeed Mingqiang’s position as an Assistant
President of ALSC-UK.
3. Call for New Fellow
Nominations:
As the Academy webpage has been
updated, it is agreed that call for nomination
of new Fellows will be made very soon. All ALSC-UK
Fellows, CLSS-UK committee members are sincerely
invited to nominate
Fellow candidates.
4. A Strong Presence of
the Academy and ALSC-UK Fellows in the 2009 CLSS-UK
Annual Meeting, to be held on the 12th-13th
September, UCL, London: It has been agreed
that a formal meeting of ALSC Fellows will be
held during the September London Meeting at the
lunch time of 13th September 2009. It
will be co-chaired by the incumbent President
and the new President to summarise the past year
and plan the future. Founding and new Fellows
are encouraged to contribute to plenary lectures
and to a 2-hour ‘Meet the Experts’ sessions to
be held at 9-11 am, 13th September.
Prof Mingqing Du will serve as the modulator of
this session.
5. Summary:
It has been agreed that better establishment of
the Academy remains the top priority for 2009.
These include: increasing visibility of the
Academy through further improving the ALSC-UK
web pages; election of new Fellows, election of
new President, appointment of new Vice
Presidents, as well as a strong presence in the
AGM of the Society. Meeting attendees have all
very much enjoyed the style of this meeting,
discussing formal issues in a casual and relaxed
environment. It is suggested that similar
informal gatherings among Fellows should
continue to be organised so that they can know
better each other’s research activities and
identify opportunities for potential
collaborations, etc.
