Departure of Dr Mingqiang Zhang for China and appointment of Dr Tai-Ping Fan as President Assistant of the Academy

After working as Senior Vice President for 5 years at Biotica, Dr Mingqiang Zhang, Vice Chairman of CLSS-UK, Fellow and President Assistant of ALSC-UK has accepted a job offer in China.

Dr Zhang explains: ”After the very enjoyable 5 years with Biotica, establishing a robust drug discovery pipeline and 2 major pharma partnerships with Wyeth and GlaxoSmithKline, I have decided to move on to join a pharma company in China, to establish a biotech style R&D organisation & strategy there, which is quite exciting to me.”

“I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Qihe, Mingqing and all CLSS-UK members and ALSC-UK Fellows for your friendship and help during my tenure with the CLSS & ALSC and hope we can keep contacts in the future.”

Dr Qihe Xu, Chairman of CLSS-UK, comments: “Mingqiang joined the CLSS-UK committee and was appointed a Vice Chairman in 2007. He was elected a founding Fellow of our Academy in 2008 and appointed President Assistant of the Academy in 2009. As a core leader of our Society and Academy, Mingqiang has contributed hugely in virtually all major projects of the Society and the Academy in the past 2 years. Although we will have less opportunity to see him after his departure for his exciting new job in China, I would not say that we will lose him as he will remain a close friend and Past Vice Chairman to our committee members and remain a Fellow of our Academy. I am sure that Mingqiang will serve as a middleman to promote our Society and Academy in China and to promote Sino-UK collaborations in the field of life sciences and biopharma as soon as he settles down in China.”

Dr Zhang’s new job will be based in Shanghai. For the convenience of running the Academy and assisting President Mingqing Du in Cambridge, the Academy has decided to accept Mingqiang’s request to resign from the position of President Assistant of ALSC-UK. From May 2009, Dr Tai-Ping Fan, a Fellow based in Cambridge, will succeed Mingqiang to be the new President Assistant.

All the best wishes to Mingqiang and warm congratulations to Tai-Ping!
